I should have been a doctor

I had a fun experience today at school. I had a student come up to me at the end of class and say, "Miss Lacey, I sewed my finger. I need a new needle to replace my old one." At the beginning of the semester, I told them if they ever sew their finger, they need to replace their needle for cleanliness reasons. I asked if she was okay, and she said she was fine...just a little shocked that she had gotten herself. As I was replacing her needle, I asked her where the broken part went (it usually goes flying somewhere...into an eye last year...that was fun). She wasn't sure where it went, but I figured it would get vacuumed up tonight.

A few minutes later she came up to me again and said, "Umm, I think there's a little piece of the needle in my finger. It hurts really bad. I looked at her finger and saw a little piece of needle sticking out! It looked like a little sliver, so I got out my tweezers. I tried pulling it, but the tweezers kept slipping.

So I pulled out the big guns...or my new surgical clamps I bought for cleaning out junk in my machines. I started pulling on it and realized we had a problem...this needle was deeper than we thought.

So I took her out in the hall (students were starting to stare and she was getting embarrassed). I got a good grip on it and started to pull. It was then we realized that the needle went through her ENTIRE finger! It was poking out both sides! I felt so bad because I couldn't get a grip on it. I was about to send her to the office, but I wanted to try one more time. So I clamped it and pulled hard. And I almost died when I saw how big it was! It's over 1/4". Did you notice her blood on it? Don't worry, I put it in a plastic bag. I asked her if she wanted to keep it, and she said, "NO WAY!" I might see if her mom wants to keep it. :) If not, I'll keep it to show my students every year to scare them enough to keep their fingers away!

Anyway, the girl was such a champ. I felt so bad for her, though. While I was pulling it out, I tried to distract her and talk to her. She was telling me how she's had a week full of problems like this. TGIF!

Letter to my finger

Dear right hand index finger,

I just caught your fingernail on a notebook. As I pulled you away, your fingernail ripped right off...and really low. I'm sorry you hurt so bad. I'm sorry you are covered with a band-aid right now. It makes it really hard for you to type. At least it's a Spongebob Squarepants band-aid. Does that help?

I knew it was too good to be true that your nail was getting too long.

Please forgive me. And please replace the fingernail soon.

Love,
Shannon

Memory Loss

Throughout today, I was involved in three conversations where we talked about how we remember that we need to do something and two seconds later we forget what that "really important" thing was that needed to be done! About two minutes ago, I opened up a word document and pulled up Firefox. I was going to look up something really important on the internet for my class tomorrow. And I needed to open a certain word document for a meeting I have in the morning.

What was I going to look up on the internet?
What document was so important that I needed to open?

I have no clue!

So I blogged. Lame blog, but I figured while it was up, I might as well do something with it!

Perhaps I should just go home now.

Water conserving toilets

Last weekend I was in the Portland airport heading back from my great spring break trip to Oregon. I made a little stop into the bathroom and saw this picture posted (not once, but twice) in the stall.
After I did my thing, I willingly followed directions and flushed UP for #1.
But as I was about to grab my things to go, my curiosity got the best of me.
I turned around and flushed DOWN...even without there being any #2 (solid waste) in the toilet.
I just had to see if there was a huge difference! And I must say, I did see a difference!
So to the city of Portland, I'm sorry I wasted some of your precious water (even though Portland receives rain about 150 days each year) in order to satisfy my curiosity!

Random thoughts

(Joleen, your blog entry the other day inspired this post.)

  • They serve mashed potatoes almost every Thursday at our school. I usually make my own lunch, but on some Thursdays I get school lunch just for the potatoes. mmm
  • I can't wait to read the final Fablehaven book. On Monday, my plan is to stay in my jammies and read all day long.
  • Did you know that one of the uses for Alka-Seltzer is for "upset stomach with headache from overindulgence in food or drink"? Look at a box. It actually says that. My roommate Joleen thinks I should try overindulging myself just so I can try it.
  • Our downstairs neighbors are loud. Their tv is always really loud. Last night they were yelling (didn't sound like happy yelling). They're just plain loud, but I'm scared of them so I don't confront them about it.
  • Did you know that when it's really windy, the toilet water in our house rocks back and forth? After a couple hours, the water level in the toilet goes down a lot. It's really weird.
  • Today after school, I had 3o students in my room for 80 minutes! They were all trying to finish their project so they could have it over spring break. It was like having a 5th period for the day!
  • As far as I know, I didn't have any April Fools pranks pulled on me by any students.
  • Today, a boy in my class (kind of nerdy) was going to ask out a girl in my class (the popular type), and everyone was taking bets on whether she would turn him down or not. It wasn't looking too good for him. :)
  • My sister Natalie has texted me 8 times since she left for her honeymoon. Shame on her. But I got pretty flowers out of it!
  • I'm trying to update my 72 hour kit. I think it would only last me about 60 hours right now.
  • If you buy something at Roberts craft store for 50% off, you can't return it...unless you tell them you're an idiot and didn't know and beg them to take back...then they'll do it.
  • www.retailmenot.com is a great website for saving money while shopping online.
  • My sister Kristy just called and wants me to go play with her and her family. So I'm going to go now. :)
